Staying Safe at the Gym

Staying safe at the gym is as easy as getting ready for your Jozi Iron inspired workout. If you’re ready to hit the gym to lose the lockdown load, there are a few precautions you can take.

Checking in With Local Safety Guidelines

Many gyms will be able to guide you through their own process of coronavirus precautions, but for the most part, they will be (and should be) very similar in whatever gym you go to. As with all things, the situation is regularly changing, and it’s always worth checking on a regular basis to see if any of the guidance has changed.

If needs be, you can always check out our blog for home workout inspiration to keep you in shape at home while you wait.

Staying safe at the gym is also About Staying Away If Necessary

If you live in an area where there is a spike in cases, it may be best to actually stay away from the gym. While your local gym may not be closed, it may be worth exercising some caution, depending on your personal circumstances.

If you live in a household or you are in a bubble with particularly vulnerable people, such as the elderly, those with underlying health conditions, or pregnant women, it would be best to keep your workouts to home or in your local area for the time being.

Keep Your Distance

If your area is not in a lockdown, visiting the gym may be a safe enough activity to partake in, as long as you observe the social distancing that will be in place.

Many gyms have reduced their available equipment number by removing pieces of equipment or marking them off for non-use to ensure the correct distance between people is kept.

Some equipment will require more inventive methods of distancing. For example, the free weights section may be marked off with tape to ensure you stand in the correct place.

Sanitise the Equipment

Before the coronavirus hit, all gym-goers were asked to wipe down equipment before and after use, but now the cleaning is a lot more intense. If you wish to use a piece of equipment or a machine, be sure to use the spray sanitiser made available by the gym or take your own.

Respect Changing Room Safety Precautions

Gym goers are being asked not to use changing rooms to get changed. It will be worth asking your gym exactly how far they are going with this guidance, but for many gyms, they are asking patrons to change ready to work out before they arrive at the gym so as to avoid changing room overcrowding.

For gyms that have on-site pools, patrons are being asked to arrive in their swimsuits and not to shower after being in the pool. While this may be uncomfortable for a short time, with everyone following the guidance, many gyms are hoping to be able to open up more soon.
